Pese a que 3.9% no es un porcentaje alto, el incremento con el tiempo del consumo prenatal del psicotr\u00f3pico y sus potenciales consecuencias adversas obligan a un mayor monitoreo e investigaci\u00f3n, sugiere el trabajo liderado por Qiana Brown, epidemi\u00f3loga de la Escuela de Salud P\u00fablica de Mailman, de la Universidad de Columbia.<\/p>\n
Casi 4 millones de mujeres dieron a luz en el 2014 en EE.UU., de acuerdo a los Centros para el Control y la Prevenci\u00f3n de Enfermedades (CDC) de aquel pa\u00eds. En tanto, el incremento del uso de marihuana entre estadounidenses se incrementa desde el 2001. De hecho, previas investigaciones demostraron que entre el 2001 y el 2013 el uso de marihuana entre adultos creci\u00f3 m\u00e1s que el doble. No estaba claro, sin embargo, si el uso de cannabis hab\u00eda cambiado en mujeres en edad reproductiva, embarazadas o no.<\/p>\n
En el nuevo trabajo, se analiz\u00f3 informaci\u00f3n de m\u00e1s de 200.000 mujeres entre 18 y 44 quienes llenaron la Encuesta Nacional sobre el Uso de Drogas y la Salud desde el 2002 hasta el 2014. Dicho escrutinio incluye preguntas sobre si las participantes hab\u00edan usado drogas el mes anterior. El 5% de las mujeres (aproximadamente 10.500) pasaba por un embarazo durante la encuesta.<\/p>\n
Adem\u00e1s de medir el consumo, los investigadores descubrieron c\u00f3mo el uso vari\u00f3 en edades distintas. Los \u00edndices de marihuana fueron mayores entre mujeres entre 18 y 25 de lo que fue en mujeres entre 26 y 44 \u2014en la medici\u00f3n del \u201cmes anterior\u201d, las m\u00e1s j\u00f3venes alcanzaban un 7.5%, mientras que las mayores solo un 2.1%. Adicionalmente, para las mujeres no embarazadas en edad reproductiva, el uso de la marihuana tambi\u00e9n subi\u00f3: de un 6.3% en el 2002 a un 9.3 en el 2014.<\/p>\n
La evidencia de los efectos del cannabis en la etapa prenatal aun no es muy amplia y a menudo es materia de controversia. En un editorial publicado en la misma revista, la directora del Instituto Nacional sobre el Abuso de Drogas, indic\u00f3 que \u201csi bien la evidencia sobre los efectos de la marihuana es limitada, existen trabajos que sugieren que hay raz\u00f3n para preocuparse\u201d.<\/p>\n
Sin embargo, dichos resultados a\u00fan distan de ser contundentes: los retos de esta investigaci\u00f3n a futuro es separar los efectos de la marihuana durante el embarazo de aquellos relacionados al alcohol o el tabaco, que casi siempre usados al mismo tiempo.<\/p>\n
